Enjoy these railways in Yorkshire
Wensleydale Railway
The Wensleydale railway runs very close by Dalesend Cottages. The line cuts through our private estate land and we can hear the steam train whistles. Marvel at the landscapes from the comfort of your seat without the driving hassle.
Settle to Carlisle Railway
Our guests recommend this as a day trip extraordinaire. Drive to Settle, then book on a lunch train for a return trip. Hold on to your seats, this rail line crosses some breath-taking viaducts, such as The Ribblehead Viaduct.
North York Moors Railway
It’s a bit of a drive from here to Pickering, but from there you can take the train through the moors all the way to Whitby.

Our closest gardens are Constable Burton Hall gardens, Leyburn. Its tulip displays in the spring are a constant favourite for locals and visitors.
Castle Howard, near York
Further afield is Castle Howard, as seen in the TV series Brideshead Revisited and Victoria. A grand and well-known Yorkshire house, it offers so much to see and do on a day out.
Helmsley Walled Garden, Helmsley
If you’re heading to the market town of Helmsley, its Walled Garden is a charming spot.
Thorp Perrow Arboretum, Bedale
We think this is real gem so close to our cottages. If you want to go outside but not drive miles, this is your go-to option. We love walking amongst its fine private collection of trees and shrubs, enjoying the birds of prey and mammal centre. There are even meerkats and a café. Perfect.
Himalayan Gardens, Ripon
These are something of a locals’ secret, but we highly recommend them. They have an extensive collection of rhododendrons and Himalayan plants, which are quite unusual for Yorkshire. There’s also a sculpture park. We think garden connoisseurs will love their visit here. Open seasonally April – June and Oct-Nov.
The National Garden Scheme
Every year, talented gardeners open their gardens to the general public to raise money for charity. There are some wonderful properties near Dalesend Cottages you may wish to explore. Why not time your visit to make the most of what’s open?

Please visit here if you have time. Surround yourself in a timeless place, serene and green. Leave feeling your feet have walked somewhere sacred, a place of whispered prayers, secrets and dreams between the ruins.
Newby Hall and Gardens, Ripon
We recommend a visit to Newby Hall. You can go on tours of the house and admire its Chippendale furniture. It’s also home to a brilliant dolls house collection, one of the finest in the world. However the jewel in the crown are the gardens – from the White Garden to the National Cornus Collection. There’s even a miniature railway running through the grounds.
The Walled Garden at Scampston Hall near Malton
Towards the Yorkshire coast, the Walled Garden is must if you’re a fan of renowned Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf.
